Juventus’ Scudetto hopes were dashed after their failure to beat Chievo. Carlo Garganese blasts sporting director Alessio Secco’s transfer policy, and argues that some serious investment must be made to the Old Lady’s defence this summer...

“Once upon a time teams like Chievo came to Juventus to see how many goals they would concede. Today they come looking for victory,” roared a furious Mauro Camoranesi following yesterday’s 3-3 draw in Turin that has, barring a Biblical miracle, certainly ended the Bianconeri’s dreams of the Scudetto.

With Inter scraping a somewhat fortuitous 1-0 win at Udinese, the gap between the top two in Serie A is now nine points, with just eight games left to play. Aside from the head-to-head clash next weekend, Juventus also still have to go away to third placed Milan, and fourth positioned Genoa. All of Inter’s remaining fixtures are against teams just above or below mid-table, meaning that it is quite possible the Nerazzurri’s advantage will further increase by the end of the campaign.

Claudio Ranieri is putting on a typically brave face and refusing to concede the Scudetto, but the wise thing to do now is for Juventus to start planning for next season, and ensure they buy the right players to give them a realistic chance of ending Inter’s post-Calciopoli Scudetto stranglehold.

The area that needs serious reconstruction is the defence.

Juventus may have the second best defensive record in Serie A, they may also have returned from Real Madrid in the Champions League without conceding, but the simple truth is that a defence consisting of Zdenek Grygera, Olof Mellberg and Cristian Molinaro will not win you major honours. These are average players who “once upon a time” would not have even made the Bianconeri substitutes bench, let alone be regular starters. Yesterday afternoon all three were very disappointing, particularly Mellberg, who was at fault for Sergio Pellissier’s second and third goals.

There is plenty of talk in the press about Juventus looking to sign another attacker this summer, with Fabio Quagliarella, Sergio Floccari, and even David Villa mentioned. If this materialises, then the 'Calcio Comedy' about Alessio Secco being an Inter spy may actually be more than just a satire.

Since the summer of 2006, when Luciano Moggi departed, and numerous champions such as Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Thuram, Vieira and Ibrahimovic jumped ship, it is fair to say that Secco has only strengthened one Juventus first team position via the transfer market. The Bianconeri’s current strongest team consists of Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Camoranesi, Marchisio, Sissoko, Nedved/Giovinco; Del Piero, Amauri

During their 2006/07 Serie B campaign, with the exception of Grygera, Sissoko and Amauri, all of the above players were Juventus-owned. The Czech right back is no superior to a fully fit (physically and psychologically) Jonathan Zebina. Amauri has been a revelation, but Juventus were already formidable in attack, as has been proved in his absence over the past few weeks, with Juve scoring 11 goals in their last three games. The only signing over the last three years who has strengthened a position of the pitch has been Momo Sissoko.

This, in a nutshell, sums up what a disaster Secco has been. If it had not been for the old guard, and talented youngsters such as Chiellini, Marchisio, De Ceglie and Giovinco coming through, things could have been really ugly now. Consider just how good Juve could now be if they had nailed just one position in each of the last three years.

Secco and the transfer team will get a fourth chance to put things right this summer, and if they have any sense they will spend all their money on a full back, centre back and midfielder. Concentrating on the topic of this debate, if you compare Juventus’ defence to Inter’s, you realise what has been the difference between the two sides this season. Nerazzurri reserves, such as Maxwell and Ivan Cordoba, would make the Juve first team, while the regular backline of Maicon, Samuel, Chivu and Santon are on another planet altogether, not forgetting Javier Zanetti, who can also drop back. Only Giorgio Chiellini can stand up to these players, but he cannot do everything by himself, and even the great Gianluigi Buffon is not winning the "eight-to-ten points a season" he once was.

Inter have certainly ridden their luck this season, and they have also received a number of favourable decisions from officials but, despite their predictable and pedestrian midfield, one thing you can say is that they know how to defend a lead. Seven clean sheets in their last 11, including four on the bounce, is enough evidence of this. With 21 goals conceded, Inter have the best defensive record in Serie A by quite some distance, and all this despite Chivu and Samuel playing just 25 league games between them due to injuries. If Inter had come from behind to go 3-2 up against Chievo, there would have been no chance of them letting it slip in injury time.

What Juventus need to do this summer is crystal clear, but who would bet against Secco and Ranieri buying another forward?

What are your views on this topic? Do you agree that Juventus will never win anything with their current defence? Who do they need to buy this summer? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think…

Italian media have reported this morning that Juventus have showed an interest in Napoli midfielder Daniele Mannini, and could launch a bid to secure his services in the summer.

The 25-year-old, who has also been associated with Inter in the past, joined Napoli from Brescia in January 2008 for a fee of around €6.5 million, and his agent Davide Lippi has insisted that his client has no intention of leaving Campania for the time being.

“I have a good rapport with Juve director of sport Alessio Secco,” the son of Italy coach Marcello Lippi told the Roma newspaper.

“If these rumours were true, he would have already called me. I think it’s just paper talk and Daniele loves it in Naples.”

Mannini was handed a one-year drug ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last January for turning up late to a doping test, but returned to action against Milan a fortnight ago after the CAS decided to re-examine the case.

Outspoken Juventus midfielder Mauro Camoranesi has launched a scathing attack against his teammates following their failure to beat Chievo on Sunday.

The Bianconeri drew 3-3 with the relegation threatened Gialloblu and are now nine points adrift of League leaders Inter.

“I am sorry, we have all said the same thing in the dressing room,” Camoranesi said. “The game was over, we did well to win it in the final minutes.”

Juventus had twice gone behind but went 3-2 up after 79 minutes through in form striker Vincenzo Iaquinta.

However, Sergio Pellissier, the talismanic Chievo attacker, grabbed an equaliser and completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to make the game 3-3.

“It's not like us. This 3-3 really hurts. We have lost two really important points,” Camoranesi lamented.

“Once upon a time teams like Chievo came to Juventus to see how many goals they would concede. Today they come looking for victory.

“We have to do something. This is something Juventus are not used to,” the 32-year-old former Hellas Verona player concluded.

Juventus are hoping to extend their fanbase in Asia by giving a trial to the 20-year-old Shanghai Shenhua defender Yang Yun.

The Chinese youngster reportedly first came to the Bianconeri's attention during their Asia Pacific Tour last summer.

“He is not very well known even in China,” Oberto Petricca, his agent, admitted. “I have only seen him play a couple of games.

“This operation began with the tour Juventus went on last year,” Petricca explained. “Yun is not only valuable in a technical sense, I believe he represents the general synergy between the Bianconeri and Shanghai Shenhua.”

Juventus are believed to have entered into a feeder club arrangement with Shanghai Shenhua, the 2008 Chinese Super League runners up.

“Yun will make interest in Juventus grow in China, this boy will become a valid instrument of communication between the two countries,” Petricca added.

“It's important for Chinese footballers to get to know a more professional reality. Shanghai Shenhua are a dynamic club that already has links with Sydney United. They are open to links abroad,” Petricca concluded.

Other clubs in Europe have contracted Asian players to boost their presence in the region, most notably Manchester United with Dong Fangzhuo.

Star Juve duo Buffon and Trezeguet are set to be the subject to a bid from Barcelona…

Barcelona are poised to test Juventus with bids for Gianluigi Buffon and David Trezeguet, despite both the agents of both player stating that they are unlikely to move.

The Blaugrana have been planning their summer rebuilding plans for over three months and the Italian goalkeeper and the French striker have been on their shopping list since the beginning.

Last summer, when Samuel Eto'o appeared to be set to leave Camp Nou, coach Pep Guardiola told technical secretary Txiki Begiristain that Trezeguet was his number one choice as a replacement.

Now the Catalan outfit are planning to make their interest concrete with a bid that could see Juve have to weigh up whether they can afford to hold on to their stars, Il Corriere dello Sport states.

Victor Valdes' position at Barcelona is the same as Eto'o's, with both players due to have contract talks about new deals. Both are still uncertain whether they will be offered what they believe they are worth.

Several goalkeepers have been linked with Barca already this season, however, Buffon would be the number one choice and his agent, Silvano Martina, has admitted that should an offer be made it would have to be considered.

Eto'o claims to have made up his mind regarding whether he will stay or go this summer, with the options being to pen a new deal or be sold. If he decides to leave, Guardiola would prefer Trezeguet to the much-touted David Villa due to his greater physique.

The Bianconeri will have Diego in their Easter basket this year as they speed ahead with the deal...

Juventus are on the verge of concluding the deal to bring Werder Bremen ace Diego to Turin, according to reports.

Sportmediaset.it claims the Bianconeri are showing signs of urgency as they fight hard to push the deal through.

The report suggests Juve could have the Brazilian ace all wrapped up and in the bag by Easter as they attempt to secure his services for next season. The latest developments come just 24 hours after Diego's father Jair De Cunha claimed his son only wanted to move to Juventus.

With Diego in their pockets, voices from Turin also suggest there could be plans to bring in Valencia's David Silva. Recent speculation regarding Gianluigi Buffon leaving has been rife, and Sportmediaset have added to the confusion by claiming the club will sell their goalkeeper to fund a move for Silva.

Just last week Buffon's agent Silvano Martina said he would consider mega offers for his client. The Bianconeri are keen on strengthening. This season has not gone to plan, and directors at the club will be busy devising schemes for next term as they plan to spend wisely during the summer transfer market.
