After two days and a half of rest, Ranieri and his team had their first training session of the week. Today saw the start of the approach to the return of the championship in view of Sunday’s afternoon match against Chievo.

The absentees consisted of the 11 internationals and Sissoko who began his physiotherapy. Amongst the players present was Amauri, who returned to Vinovo after the rehabilitation phase in Cesenatico. The striker underwent magnetic resonance tests and an x-ray which showed a good improvement to the problem suffered during the training session on the 12th of March. In order to complete his rehabilitation the Brazilian will continue undergoing therapy until the next tests are made at the beginning of next week.

On the field, apart from goalkeepers Chimenti, Manninger and Nocchi were another 16 players including Yago and three other Primavera players (De Paola, Alcibiade and Mirrarchi). Players under observation, Legrottaglie, Zanetti, Camoranesi and De Ceglie joined the group for the warm-up and ball possession exercises with long and short distances in order to regain their athletic form.

Alessio Secco and Jean-Claude Blanc, were at the Juventus Center. The Juventus general manager showed the sports centre to special guest Fabrizio Giugiaro, famous designer and great Juventus supporter, one of the prestigious brands that are contributing to the new stadium project.

With the weekend’s matches still fresh, the national teams are once again ready to go to the field for another two exciting days including the 11 bianconeri called-up with their respective national teams.

Tonight Casiraghi’s complete Under 21 squad (the one which will be taking part in the European Cup in Sweden next June) will play in Holland . De Ceglie, who is nearing recovery from the injury, will be absent but Pierluigi Casiraghi can count on 3 other bianconeri. If Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco are a point of reference for the team, Lorenzo Ariaudo is in the shoes of the newcomer. After the great performance and the goal scored against Austria last Wednesday, the defender deserved the call-up. The friendly is scheduled for 20:45hrs (live on Rai Tre).

Tomorrow, Wednesday 1st April, it will be the turn of the senior squad. Much attention will be paid to the bianconeri derby which will take place in Bari. Marcello Lippi, Italy coach, will be playing against Giovanni Trappatoni the coach of Ireland assisted by two other symbolic names such as those of Marco Tardelli and Liam Brady. Amongst the possible protagonists are the 3 bianconeri called-up for Italy: Buffon, Chiellini and Iaquinta. In case of a victory, Italy would make a great step ahead towards qualification for South Africa 2010.

Reaching the World Cup is also the objective of Knezevic’s Croatia (playing against Andorra), Grygera’s Czech Republic (playing the derby against Slovakia) and Poulsen’s Denmark (playing against Albania).

The other two bianconeri Mellberg and Tiago will be involved in friendly matches. After having played against each other on Saturday, Sweden and Portugal will be playing against Serbia and South Africa (the hosts of the next world championship) respectively.

Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has scoffed at reports claiming Chelsea made a bid for David Trezeguet.

Reports in both England and Italy claimed Roman Abramovich approached the Bianconeri with an €8million offer for the French hitman. Gigli has reacted to the news, and his words seem to suggest the voices were considerably inaccurate.

"An offer from Chelsea for Trezeguet? I'm not aware of it," Gigli told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

The chief gave short and sharp answers as he attempted to dodge a flurry of questions from the hungry press gang who were waiting outside the Lega Calcio offices in Milan, where a presidents' meeting had taken place.

Buffon recently claimed that he would leave Juve if a big offer from abroad came along. Gigli tried to put the lid on the rumours which followed.

"I hope Buffon's saves will continue from now until the end of the season," added Gigli.

"He has a contract with us and he still has plenty to give to us. Buffon is right to talk about his future, but he will stay with us for a long time."

Chelsea could step in to lure Juventus striker David Trezeguet, according to Tuttosport.

Trezeguet's future has been uncertain since he rowed with Coach Claudio Ranieri after exiting the Champions League.

The French international was aggrieved at being replaced during the last 16 second leg against Chelsea.

And it has been suggested in Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport that the Blues could pounce this summer.

The West London outfit are reportedly considering a bid of around £8m for the unsettled star.

Trez has made over 200 appearances for the Old Lady and is under contract until 2011.

Juve are reportedly lining up Udinese ace Fabio Quagliarella as a replacement.

Turin-based daily Tuttosport today claims that Premier League giants Chelsea are ready to make a formal offer in the region of €8 million to secure the services of Juventus striking star David Trezeguet.

It is suggested that the Old Lady want to get more money out of the deal, however, they are prepared to start negotiations with the London side.

Juve shelled out €28m to capture the 31-year-old Frenchman from Ligue 1 outfit Monaco in 2000. He has made over 200 appearances for the Turin powerhouse and has a contract until 2011, with wages of €4.8 per season.

Should the Corso Galileo Ferraris directors agree to let Trezeguet leave for England, Juve are likely to replace him with Udinese and Italy star Fabio Quagliarella.

The Neapolitan hitman has long been a target for the Old Lady, who are prepared to offer money and the services of striker Michele Paolucci. The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Catania but is co-owned by Juve and Udinese.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has urged the Bianconeri to sign Franck Ribery this summer.

The Old Lady are expected to strengthen the squad for a Scudetto bid next term.

A number of names have been suggested in the media, including Antonio Cassano, Diego and David Silva.

“I think we have enough quality in the middle of the park,” Marchisio told Tuttosport.

“However, I know that we need more champions if we are to improve as a team and bringing in great players can only increase the technical level.

“I think that Diego is a very good player, but if you ask me I would have no doubt who we should sign - I'd buy Ribery.

“Franck is an incredible player and he could provide us with even more creativity when Pavel Nedved retires.

“Cassano is also a champion and he has been reborn at Sampdoria after his troubled spell at Real Madrid.

“He has found the right environment and is showing the full extent of his talent. Would he help Juve's cause? You decide…”

Over the past few weeks, Juventus officials have promised reinforcements in the summer and it appears one of the names on their shortlist is that of Tottenham Hotspur defender Gareth Bale, according to Tuttosport.

The 19-year-old is considered a hot prospect in Europe and the Bianconeri are reportedly interested in bringing him to the club to compete for the left-back position with Cristian Molinaro and Paolo De Ceglie.

However, the Italian club will have to fend off interest from Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United, who have also been impressed by the former Southampton player.

As a possible replacement, Spurs are considering a move for Real Madrid's Gabriel Heinze. The Argentine international has already had a stint in England, playing for Man United between 2004 and 2007.

Bale has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the north London outfit this season.

Giovanni Trapattoni has warned Italy to take his Republic of Ireland side seriously on Wednesday evening.

Trap led the Azzurri until the end of Euro 2004 but left a legacy of disappointment after failures on the European and world stage.

Now the experienced tactician is trying to secure a win over his home nation in a crucial World Cup 2010 qualifier.

“It is important for us to win in Italy, but also that we don't lose,” Trapattoni told Eurosport.

“We will go to Bari without fear. I'm not scared of losing because we have a good lead over both Cyprus and Bulgaria.

“In Italy people are saying that we have a strong side and we aren't just succeeding because of me. We may be low in the FIFA rankings, but the Azzurri respect us.”

Blog: Italy on song
There was a big hullabaloo when Italy lost to Brazil in London, but, as Steve Wilson points out, when it matters the Azzurri are doing just fine
Played five, won four, drawn one. Not a bad record for the reigning world champions at the halfway stage in the World Cup qualifiers – the matches that really matter. Back in February, when Italy lost 2-0 in a glorified exhibition match at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, the brouhaha in sections of the media was unbelievable. It was a result that, apparently, highlighted a major power shift in world football and exposed the weaknesses throughout Marcello Lippi’s squad. Or so they said.

It is to be expected though, some observers will always have their objectivity dazzled by the shiny yellow shirt of the Seleçao. The South Americans' series of friendly matches in Europe have made them little more than world football’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters. Sweden and Argentina join the list of nations lined-up as ‘opponents’ for Brazil in London since the 2006 World Cup – all lost, with Brazil not even conceding a goal.

People pay for the ‘experience’ of watching Brazil beat their opponent in these money-spinning glamour ties, but when it comes to the real deal – World Cup qualifiers – things aren’t as impressive. So far en route to South Africa they have drawn with such major powers as Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador and lost to Paraguay. Yes, they always under-perform in qualification, but that record is a reminder that perhaps a little perspective could have been used.

The only thing that Italy lost against Brazil was the chance to extend Lippi’s unbeaten run. It clearly did not affect them when they faced Montenegro on Saturday and will not cross their minds when they line-up against Ireland on Wednesday. That match with Giovanni Trapattoni’s side, now there is one which will gauge where the world champions are at a year or so ahead of their title defence. Win that one and they have one foot on the plane to Johannesburg.

In European qualifiers only Spain currently have a better record – with five wins from five. Germany and Holland can match La Nazionale and England, who have only played four, are also performing just as well. The fact that Lippi’s side are in the pack of leading contenders goes to show that the hot air expelled in the aftermath of that February match was unfounded. Wise observers always knew that the Montenegro-Ireland double header was the real litmus test. So far, so good.

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi is hoping to play for Italy against the Republic of Ireland and explains his Serie A exile.

Sampdoria marksman Giampaolo Pazzini is the man of the moment after he scored on his Azzurri debut against Montenegro.

Italy are set to play a crucial World Cup 2010 qualifier against Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland in Bari on Wednesday evening.

“I hope that I will play,” Rossi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We will have to see when the team is announced. I don't feel left out because I didn't feature in Podgorica and I am relaxed.

“A 4-4-2 system could suit me best. At Villarreal I play as a second striker, even if we use a 4-2-4 formation. But I will adapt to any position the Coach gives me.”

Rossi then gave his view on the hot topic of Juventus striker Amauri's desire to play for Italy.

“There are lots of foreigners who are available for Italy because everybody wants to play for the world champions,” the former Manchester United man said.

“It's nice because Amauri, Rodrigo Taddei and Dias Felipe are great champions.

“Why don't I play in Italy? It's not my fault. The clubs made their decisions and I have made mine.

“Italian football is changing and there is more space for youngsters now, which is a good thing.

“In England and Spain they have more patience and at Barcelona there are three or four players under 20 who regularly start.”

Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco has underlined his intention to stay at the club despite rumours suggesting he will leave in the summer.

The 22-year-old has caught the eye this season with some wonderful performances, the most remarkable coming against Bologna on March 14.

When asked why he has committed to Juventus, Giovinco replied: “Simple. At 22 you cannot be doing any better in life.

“Sure I cannot spend the next 15 years on the bench. But I am a hard worker and I want to stay at Juventus.

“Obviously, I want to play, I need continuity, it's important for any player,” Giovinco told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italy Under-21 international then revealed just how much he wants to win something as a player and a Juventino.

“I want to win because if you want to become a champion you have win something and I want to win something great with Juventus,” he said.

When confronted with the fact that even Alessandro Del Piero hasn't won the Ballon d'Or, he said: “He is still a champion, a champion of the world.”

The diminutive winger nicknamed the Atomic Ant by Juventus fans later dismissed rumours that have put him at odds with Del Piero.

“The people who say these things want to create problems that simply don't exist,” Giovinco added.

“To me, Del Piero is a teammate. He is the captain of our team. He gives advice not only to the young players.”

Giovinco then turned his attention to World Cup 2010, which will be held in South Africa and many feel he will be part of.

“I won't tell you the percentage I have of going to South Africa, but I admit that I am thinking about it. Meanwhile, I want to carve out a space for myself at Juventus,” he explained.

Giovinco then took a step back and told La Gazzetta what he believes he would have been if he had not made it as a footballer.

“I would have ended up in the middle of the street,” he laughed. “No, I probably would have become a metal mechanic like my father Giovanni.”

Sebastian Giovinco's first proper season at Juventus has not been entirely satisfactory; the ‘Atomic Ant’ has made only 12 starting appearances in all competitions.

The 22-year-old has been given more space in the starting XI in recent weeks, but there are persistent rumours that the Old Lady could use him as bait to land Sampdoria star Antonio Cassano in the summer.

“Do you know why I keep saying I won’t be leaving Juve? It’s very simple: it does not get better than this at 22,” Giovinco told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Of course I don’t want to sit on the bench for 15 years. But I am stubborn - I want to stay here. And it goes without saying that I want to play because consistency is important for every player.

“And I want to win. You have to win something in order to become a champion. I want to win something big with Juventus.”

Giovinco has stressed how he looks to Alessandro Del Piero for guidance and rumour has it that the Bianconeri captain often reprimands his young team-mate on the pitch.

“That is what people say to stir up controversy,” claimed Giovinco. “Del Piero is one of my team-mates and he is the skipper. He always doles out advices and not just to young players.

“He has never won the Ballon d’Or, but he is nonetheless a World Cup winner. Do I dream of making the Italy squad for South Africa? I think about it but for now I just want to find more space at Juve.”

Despite a seven-point gap to Serie A leaders Inter with just nine games remaining in the season, Juventus wing-back Cristian Molinaro claims the Bianconeri have not given up hope of celebrating their 28th Scudetto come the end of the season.

“When you enter Juve’s locker room, there is no need for words, you can feel it [expectation] in the air,” Molinaro told Tuttosport.

“Our team are accustomed to comebacks and victories and we are eager to get back up there. Roma went close last season but that came undone because of Inter’s ability.

“We are giving it a shot and I hope we will go into our direct confrontation with a smaller gap and that we manage to defeat them.”

Juve will welcome Jose Mourinho’s men to the Stadio Olimpico on April 18 in what could turn out to be a title decider.

“In our first match in Milan, we were not very sharp,” admitted the 25-year-old. “We will be more determined this time around and get off to a flying start.

“I don’t think that Inter are dependent on [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic. He is a great champion, but they have several players who can be decisive.”

Inter edged Juve 1-0 back in November courtesy of a Sulley Muntari strike.

Juventus goalkeeper Alexander Manninger believes that his side are capable of obtaining the Serie A title, despite a seven point gap between themselves and first place Inter.

"The championship is still open. We have done well to stay close to Inter and anything is still possible," suggested the shot stopper to Calciomercato.

"We think we can catch Inter, but we must pay attention to every match. The Italian league is very competitive and if you only focus on the strongest teams than you end up losing points on the road."

Manninger was influential during the injury-enforced absence of Gianluigi Buffon earlier in the campaign, but he now finds himself in the treatment room with a calf injury.

"I am pleased with the choice I made in the summer [to join Juventus] and now I want to continue to give my best for this team and be back in good condition as soon as possible," the 31-year-old concluded.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season.

Juventus find themselves seven points behind Inter in the race for the Serie A title, but president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli will not give up and believes the upcoming tie against the Nerazzurri will be crucial.

"It is the last chance for the Scudetto," he told the Corierre dello Sport on Monday.

Meanwhile, Juventus find themselves behind 2-1 on aggregate to Lazio in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, but the Bianconero supremo is confident his team can still win the competition.

"To win against the Biancocelesti would be important. If we successfully win then that would be a record ten times," he explained, also looking forward to qualifying for the Italian Super Cup in Beijing.

"The Supercup final will be played in China, it would be an opportunity to further market the club in a country where it is already well known."

Juventus currently trail Inter by seven points in the Serie A table, but Claudio Ranieri’s men will have a marvellous opportunity to cut that gap next month when Nerazzurri travel to the Stadio Olimpico.

“I took my time and compared our fixture list to that of Inter and Milan, just to be cautious about a second-place finish,” Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli told Tuttosport.

“My predictions were right last weekend and now we’ll see what happens over the next few weeks. I believe we will defeat Inter, because we have to win that game at all costs, but I won’t reveal the rest…

“However, should we overcome the Nerazzurri, our chances could raise to 40-45 per cent, particularly if Udinese will remember they wear Bianconero too.”

The Zebrette drew both games with the Beneamata last term and will welcome Jose Mourinho’s men to the Stadio Friuli next weekend, while Juve host a resurgent Chievo side who have picked up ten points from their last four outings.

Juventus are being linked with a move for Neven Subotic, the 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund centre-back.

The Bianconeri have been scouring the Bundesliga for talent in recent months and are prepared to make Subotic their latest import from Germany.

Juventus recently signed Sami Khedira and Serdar Tasci from Stuttgart and are also monitoring Werder Bremen trequartista Diego.

Subotic has impressed the Bianconeri's scouting staff with his height and goalscoring ability in this his first season for Dortmund.

He has scored five goals for Die Borussen and made his debut for Serbia on Saturday against Romania.

Subotic, who grew up in the United States of America, is reportedly worth £10m, but an offer of £8m would apparently be enough to tempt Dortmund into selling him.

Juventus face significant competition for his signature, though, as Liverpool, Tottenham, Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Roma are also on his tail.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Juventus have joined a queue of suitors for Borussia Dortmund defensive ace Neven Subotic.

The 20-year-old central defender has been making waves in the Bundesliga this term and his performances have caused a buzz around Europe, alerting the likes of Bayern Munich, Roma, Fiorentina and Liverpool to his abilities.

Juve boss Claudio Ranieri has allegedly been impressed with the tall stopper, who has a knack for scoring goals.

Subotic joined Borussia from Mainz last summer and has quickly established himself as a first team regular. It is suggested that the Bianconeri have repeatedly sent out scouts to monitor his progress.

He also made his international debut for Serbia last week in a World Cup qualifier against Romania and any side willing to prise him away from the Signal Iduna Park is expected to have to shell out between €8-10 million.

Juventus are the latest side to be linked with in-demand Siena defender Juan Zuniga.

The Colombian joined Siena last summer from Atletico Nacional and has certainly made a name for himself.

Zuniga has been linked with Milan, Fiorentina, Palermo, Sevilla, Arsenal and West Ham over the last month.

“We have had offers from several top clubs,” agent Riccardo Calleri claimed on Sportal.

“The lad likes life in Italy, but we will also consider options abroad. We will have to see.

“He will be a valuable asset in the transfer market when June arrives. He wants to play in the Champions League and we will try and find a solution that suits Zuniga and Siena.

There are reports that Juve see Zuniga as a replacement for the inconsistent Zdenek Grygera.

Ho fatto una promessa” (I made a promise), is the title of Nicola Legrottaglie’s book which was presented at the Media Center in Vinovo during the press conference which also saw the particpation of Darwin Pastorin and Mariella Scirea. In his book, the defender recounts his experience as a man of faith, faith which supported him in these years and helped him reach his objectives. The first of these was to become a professional player and it id from this wish that the title of the book was born. A promise to GodIf I ever become a Serie A player, I will be a missionary in the world – one can read on the fly-page of the cover. He did his part and now it is my turn».

«In this book I recount my experience, the route of my life, as a footballer and as a man of faith. The two paths are inevitably linked because God is always present in every moment. The message that is conveyed is that He is always by our side and we only have to open up our heart to receive him».

Nicola, besides the book, also spoke of football with Juventus Channel: «Now I am well, my knee is responding and shout be available after the break. My team mates played really well, showing once again that there are no first team players or reserves but that Juventus is a team made up of players of great value».

Juventus’ improvement, not only on a results level has been acclaimed and recognized even by the opponents. Mourinho, himself, spoke well of Ranieri’s team: «This is of great satisfaction to us. Two years ago we were in the Serie B and having got to this point in such a short time competing with a team like Inter is a reason to be proud». With reference to the title of his book Legrottaglie is asked what promise he would like to make to the fans: «That all of us will always give the maximum effort. I cannot promise results, it wouldn’t be right, even if the thing we all want is victory. We for sure, will not let go until the very end».

After the beautiful victory at the Olimpico in Rome (4-1) thanks to two goals by Iaquinta and one each by Mellberg and Nedved, Ranieri granted the team two days of well deserved rest in view of the break in the championship due to the World Cup 2010 qualifiers. The bianconeri, excluding the players called up with Italy and other countries, will train in Vinovo from Tuesday afternoon to Saturday morning.

Buffon, Chiellini and Iaquinta are the players called-up by Marcello Lippi. The “azzurri” will have to be at the Centro Tecnico Federale in Coverciano on Monday evening to begin their preparation in view of the two up-coming matches: on Saturday 28th March in Podgorica against Montenegro (20:45h) and on Wednesday 1st April at the San Nicola Stadium in Bari against the Republic of Ireland coached by Giovanni Trapattoni (20:50hrs).

The call-ups for the other countries have already been announced and involve five bianconeri, three of which in the same qualifying group (Group 1). Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has reservations about Brazilian born Amauri one day playing for Italy.

Amauri was recently given the all clear to apply for Italian citizenship by virtue of his wife being Italian.

The 28-year-old Juventus striker, who was born in Carapicuiba, has never once been capped by Brazil.

He would therefore be eligible to play for Italy once he receives an Italian passport, which could take six months.

When asked if he would accept Amauri playing for the Azzurri, Toni replied: “I don't know, he has to decide.

“He certainly is an important player, but is clear that he should have managed the situation in another way.”

Amauri has regularly flip flopped this season on the question of which country he would like to represent.

Milan midfielder Rino Gattuso recently told the former Palermo attacker he should choose Brazil over Italy.

“Marco Di Vaio is also doing very well,” Toni told Sky Italia as if to make a case for the Bologna striker instead of Amauri.

“We need to take everyone into consideration. Coach Marcello Lippi has to make the decisions. I think Di Vaio deserves a lot more respect than Amauri,” he concluded.

Amauri has scored 14 goals in 37 appearances for Juventus this season, while Di Vaio has found the net on 19 occasions for Bologna in
2008-09.

Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie agrees with boss Claudio Ranieri that it has been a superb season for the Old Lady.

The Bianconeri look likely to have to settle for second place as Inter stroll towards the Scudetto.

But it is still a superb achievement for a side that have had to battle back from the abyss since the Calciopoli scandal.

“Whatever happens now it will have been an excellent year,” Legrottaglie told Tuttosport.

“What we have achieved is almost miraculous given the number of injuries that we have had.

“When you consider that we were in Serie B two years ago it has been a marvellous journey.

“Last year we were third, this time around we are second. Next year it is our turn to finish first.

“Perhaps we lack a little experience for European football but our youngsters are growing and will be amongst the best.

“Even though Inter are doing so well anything is possible and lots of teams have bounced back from further behind than we are,” he concluded.

Genoa defender Salvatore Bocchetti has described his call-up to the Italy squad as “a dream come true.”

The 22-year-old spent last season at Serie B minnows Frosinone, but he has impressed in the Grifone back line.

Bocchetti had a glowing career at Azzurrini level, but was clearly surprised to receive the senior call to face Montenegro and the Republic of Ireland.

“This selection represents the realisation of a dream,” the Naples native told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Just last year I was in Serie B with Frosinone. To get an Azzurri cap is the ultimate milestone and it has given me immense joy.

“It is a reward for all the sacrifices I have made since I was a child.”

Bocchetti has been linked with a transfer to hometown team Napoli in recent weeks.

“It could be another dream to play for my city's team, but my present is Genoa. I am happy here and I want to stay,” he said.

Giancarlo Abete has been re-elected as President of the Italian Football Federation.

Abete, who has held the post since 2007, received the backing of almost everyone in the electoral council and will remain one of calcio's most important men for the next four years.

“Thank you for your trust,” he beamed after hearing the result. “I hope to repay you with hard work and the right results.

“Italian football is certainly in better shape than it was two years ago, but it has been a hard year and we will need a lot of passion to continue past the current problems.

“We mustn't allow the global economic crisis to impact on an industry upon which so many people rely.

“Stress and emotion are part of football and we just need to fight through. It's not about following other countries - we must find our own path.”

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has named his squad for the World Cup qualifying double-header against Montenegro and Ireland, and the big news is that Sampdoria star Antonio Cassano has again been overlooked.

The 26-year-old has been in mesmeric form since the turn of the year, and this latest snub will surely lead to questions as to whether Cassano will ever feature in a Lippi-led Italy side.

However, there are a number of new faces. Roma's Marco Motta, Genoa's Salvatore Bocchetti and Samp's Giampaolo Pazzini receive their debut calls while Matteo Brighi returns having earned his only Italy cap way back in 2002. Lazio's Pasquale Foggia is also back.

Injuries mean there are no places for Alberto Aquilani, Simone Perrotta, Mauro Camoranesi and Luca Toni.

Simone Pepe is retained despite calls for him to be dropped, while Atalanta star Sergio Floccari is overlooked again. Alberto Gilardino fails to make the cut after suffering an injury for Fiorentina this afternoon.

Italy will travel to Montenegro next Saturday before hosting the Republic of Ireland in Cassano's hometown of Bari on April 1. The Azzurri are currently joint-top of Group 8 with the Irish.

Inter responded to Juventus’s demolition of Roma with an equally crushing win over rock-bottom Reggina yesterday to maintain their seven-point cushion at the top of the Serie A table.

And Nerazzurri coach Jose Mourinho complimented the Old Lady after the encounter, as they are pushing his side all the way.

“If he really said so, that’s an important recognition for Juve,” the Turin-based club's president, Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, stated this morning before entering the Hilton Hotel for an Italian Football Federation (FIGC) meeting.

“Our primary objective is to qualify for the Champions League again and do so regularly. As for the league, we will try and collect as many points as possible, just like we did against Roma.

“We will need to win them all and do our bit. Then the clash with Inter in Turin will be crucial.”

Midfielder Pavel Nedved has decided to quit at the end of the season, but there have been widespread calls for him to reconsider.

“I can just say that he keeps showing that he is among the greatest footballers in the world,” asserted Cobolli Gigli. “Will he play on? I heard that he doesn’t want to.”

Juventus were temporarily only four points behind Inter in the league on Saturday night. Then the Beneamata won their home game against Reggina and normal service was resumed.

However, Bianconeri defender Nicola Legrottaglie has said he does not believe the championship race is over, despite there being only nine games left.

“Juve and I fell from grace together, and I am glad we are coming back together too,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport, “Inter are doing brilliantly but I have hope we can win the title.

“There have been times when the gap has been bigger than seven points and the team in second place won in the end.”

The Old Lady’s boss, Claudio Ranieri added, “We have been doing superbly for the past two seasons. Internationally, we lack a little experience and we are waiting for some of our youngsters to mature, but I believe what we have done is nothing short of miraculous.”

The club's president, Cobolli Gigli also spoke, focusing on the match between the two top sides, “Inter are very strong,” he said, “But in a one off game anything can happen.

He concluded by making a point about Pavel Nedved, “Sooner or later we must respect his choices, but if he decides to play on that would be great.”

Between them, Inter ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juve star Pavel Nedved have put agent Mino Raiola under the Italian media spotlight in recent weeks.

The representative has dodged questions over Ibrahimovic’s future this morning, after the Swedish striker hinted at a possible departure from Inter next summer, but reiterated that Nedved could reconsider his decision to call it a day at Juve at the end of the season.

“He said his goodbyes, but I will try and make him play on,” Raiola told Calciomercato.it.

“Of course, if Juve had other plans, it would be pointless. But that’s not what I have heard.

“Juve have told me that if Pavel will decide to continue his career, they are ready to offer a contract extension.

Nedved has been struggling with injury problems in recent weeks, but made a substitute appearance at the weekend and netted a stunning goal against Roma, as Juve triumphed 4-1 at the Olimpico.

Juventus forward Vincenzo Iaquinta has earned a starring role in recent weeks due to Amauri’s injury problems and David Trezeguet’s spat with coach Claudio Ranieri. He netted a crucial brace at the weekend as the Bianconeri destroyed Roma 4-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to maintain their Serie A title hopes.

“I am ready to bet on us winning the Scudetto,” the striker told Tuttosport. “We still believe in it and [we] will do so until the very end. This is our mentality; we have this in our DNA.

“As for me, I am like this: if I play, I score goals. This is no time to stoke controversy. I have got over that 'explosion’ in Catania; I was just furious for spending so much time on the bench.”

Iaquinta netted a goal against the Etnei and his wild celebration earned him a yellow card, which proved costly as he was later dismissed for a second offence.

“I feel good now and I started my fifth game on the trot in Rome,” he stated.

“Ranieri has put faith in me and I am repaying him. I have never listened to whispers that wanted me to head for the exit door. My future is here…”

Juventus’ reported interest in Sampdoria star Antonio Cassano has grabbed plenty of column inches over the past few weeks, however, Turin-based daily Tuttosport today claims that the Corso Galileo Ferraris directors are tempted to shelve their plans to lure the skilled fantasista to Piedmont and put faith in youth product Sebastian Giovinco.

The diminutive 22-year-old has emerged from relative obscurity of late and has put in brilliant performances both in Europe and Serie A.

After playing a small part in the doomed Champions League clash with Chelsea, Giovinco earned starting roles against Bologna and Roma, netting a goal and providing his team-mates with delightful assists as the Old Lady stormed to resounding 4-1 wins.

And it is now suggested that the Bianconeri powers that be have decided to stall negotiations to sign Cassano for the time being and will evaluate the situation at the end of the season.

They will also have to sort out David Trezeguet’s future; the Frenchman has fallen out with coach Claudio Ranieri and could head for the door.

Italy: Motta and Foggia new faces?
Sunday 22 March, 2009

Marcello Lippi will name his squad to face Montenegro and Ireland with probable new entries Marco Motta and Pasquale Foggia.

The Italy Coach is set to announce the list of names for the two World Cup qualifiers later this evening.

It is reported there are going to be at least two debuts at senior level for these crucial matches.

Motta has impressed in Serie A and the Champions League since his January move to Roma and makes the step up from captain of the Under-21 squad.

Foggia is doing extremely well at Lazio in a variety of forward roles and can play wide left in a trident attack.

It would not be a senior debut for 25-year-old Foggia, who already has two caps to his name in October 2007 when he was at Cagliari.

Another possible newcomer is 22-year-old Salvatore Bocchetti of Genoa to bolster the defence, who also steps up from the Azzurrini.

Yet again there does not seem to be room for Antonio Cassano or Alessandro Del Piero in Lippi’s line-up.

Riccardo Montolivo should retain his spot in midfield despite recent poor performances for Fiorentina.

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini can play with a protective mask, which he used during the 4-1 win at Roma last night, after breaking his nose.

Probable Italy squad:
Buffon, Amelia, De Sanctis; Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso, Motta, Bocchetti, Gamberini, Dossena; Pirlo, De Rossi, Pepe, Montolivo, Palombo, Brighi, Foggia; Rossi, Gilardino, Iaquinta, Quagliarella, Di Natale.

Serie A giants Juventus have pinpointed Villarreal central defender Diego Godin as one of their top summer transfer targets, and are poised to test the Spanish sides’ resolve with a substantial bid.

According to reports in Italian sports publication Tuttosport, coach
Claudio Ranieri has been a long-time admirer of the Uruguayan stopper and has watched him form a powerful partnership with Diego Lugano for his national side.

Now it appears that Ranieri is about to table a bid in the region of €10m in order to lure promising 23-year old to Italy for the 2009/10 season.

Indeed, Juventus’ interest in the former Nacional defender is nothing new – they enquired to coach Manuel Pellegrini last summer as to his availability, and were told that it would take an eight-figure sum for Los Submarinos Amarillos to consider transferring one of their prize assets.

At the time, Juventus opted to wait and monitor his developments but now Godin has made 28 appearances for Villarreal this season including 5 in the Champions League, and Ranieri feels the time is right to re-ignite his interest.

However, Tuttosport also reports that rivals AC Milan had also shown interest in Godin previously, and may be willing to hi-jack any deal that The Old Lady aims to put in place.

Godin has made 28 appearances for the Uruguayan national team, scoring 2 goals, and has been a key figure in the bid to qualify for World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

Juventus' midfield dynamo Pavel Nedved announced his decision to quit football last month, but the campaign to persuade the 36-year-old to keep playing is gaining momentum.

Coach Claudio Ranieri also pleaded with the ex-Lazio man to further extend his career last night, after Nedved came off the bench to score a wonderful goal in Juve’s 4-1 drubbing of Roma.

And his agent Mino Raiola has further fuelled speculation that his client will be persuaded into signing a new contract.with the bianconeri.

“Will he quit? I think he will play on, and could do so for five more years,” the representative is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I will do everything in my power to make sure he [Nedved] wears the Juve shirt again next season,” commented Mino Raiola.

“There is still hope until September. He simply would like to retire to make room for young players.”

Nedved has said that it was his wife that implored him to call it a day.
